<p>The project involved bleary early mornings, late night conference calls and long business trips between Tangerine in London, Collins Aerospace in Winston Salem and Virgin Australia in Brisbane. Working together the ambition for the level of change and customisation in the cabin was agreed, and an ambition set  to deliver something special and truly on brand for the airline.</p>
<p>Within the space constraints and certification requirements, we rethought everything. The aim was to give the passenger experience a sense of flow, from walking through the aircraft door right down to the intimate detailing at the ends of their fingertips.</p>

<p>When looking at the competitive landscape, we identified that one of the shortfalls for many aircraft cabins is the lack of variation in surfaces because of the way parts of the interior are manufactured and certified, tending to leave the environment flat and with a utilitarian feel. Here was a unique opportunity to inject richness into the design of the cabin interiors to distinguish the Virgin Australia brand and significantly improve the passenger experience.</p>

<h2>Landing</h2>
<p>Dubbed ‘The Business’ by national press, the business class suites are premium, stylish and exclusive. A tapestry of different materials and textures were introduced to create a sumptuous cabin environment. Particular consideration was given to how light and shadows play upon surfaces like the louvered privacy screens, and how sparkles appear within the metallic paint on the adjacent surfaces.</p>
<p>A stunning new bar area on the B777 aircraft, interweaves with the seating layout to maximise available space for the face-to-face service, which is critical for the Virgin brand. The bar design utilises interconnecting angles and a striking flying maiden motif to bring flair to the environment. Working closely with Virgin Australia and Collins Aerospace, the new cabins are a testament to the fusion of ambition, effective collaboration and design that makes customers fall in love with a brand.</p>

<p>Contender to Australia&#8217;s larger flag carrier Qantas, Virgin Australia wanted to reposition itself from a low-cost airline to complete with its competitors in the premium travel market both domestically and internationally. Having undertaken to upgrade its long-haul A330-200 and B777 aircraft, the airline tasked us with the design of their cabin interiors for Business and Premium Economy. With business suites selected from Collins Aerospace’s popular Super Diamond,  the challenge was to infuse the cabin with sophistication and elegance that would define the airline for its quality and provide a stage for its outstanding service.</p>


<p>Popular Nordic airline, Finnair, approached us with a view to completely revamping their ground-to-air customer experience. A large part of this project involved turning their Non-Schengen customer lounge into a contemporary experience that made travelling just as enjoyable as the destination.</p>

<p>A design team formed of three partner agencies, Saffron, tangerine and Malka &amp; Portús came together to provide a powerful collaboration between brand, product and service design, and architecture.</p>
<p>A guiding brand concept called “Adaptable engineering” grew out of an inward look at the company’s values and technical strengths and an outward look at how CEPSA could differentiate itself from its competitors and other global brands that also own the colour red as a core part of their identity.</p>
<p>Visits to service stations were conducted to map the customer journey and identify pain points and opportunities for the customer experience and service design.</p>

<p>The challenge was how to create a powerful and distinctive visual language that could transform a regular petrol station from being a place to simply refuel, into a place to stop and rest. Bridging the disjuncture between the hardness of the road and the human needs of the travellers, the new design becomes a highlight to any journey. The team’s objectives were to create a visually compelling service station that represents CEPSA in a new and meaningful way, to find ways to elevate the customer experience using cutting edge design and the latest technologies to reduce maintenance costs.</p>

<p>Every touch point of the station that the customer interacts with is closely considered; from the interaction at the pumps to the canopy, shop facade, lighting and signage. The forecourt is transformed into an iconic, airy canopy by day and a glowing red beacon by night, using a high-tech ETFE material that is self-cleaning, lightweight and recyclable. Its structure is assembled in a modular fashion that can be adapted to varied station formats and the ETFE’s 100% transparency minimises the need for artificial lighting thereby reducing running costs. Our future vision for the customer’s interaction with the refuelling island also proposed separating the display from the pump to provide a more intuitive and natural refuelling operation.</p>

<p>After 80 years operating in the oil and gas sector, CEPSA, Spain’s fourth largest industrial group, has become a major player in the Global energy market. Yet, even as the company’s products and services have swelled, it is their petrol stations that remain the crucial touch-point that connects the brand with society. In 2014 CEPSA looked to revitalise its service orientated spaces and empower the brand by commissioning the design of its flagship service stations.</p>

<p>The team sought inspiration and gathered insight from diverse sources and user contexts for the event accommodation to maximise the potential of the room, which measured just 3.6m x 2m x 2m. The room needed to be able to offer a range of different ensuite configurations to suit different travel groups. And to make the challenge really interesting, the whole thing had to fold in half on the back of a truck for ease of transportation.</p>

The idea was to redefine the whole guest experience – everything from the design of the fixtures and fittings to the colour palette and the atmosphere. Achieving it required some cunning and creative design solutions.</p>

<p>The rooms offer 7 different bed configurations and feature fold down beds, hidden within super-sleek metal frames integrated into the walls &#8211; achieved by exploiting specialist laser-cutting and folding processes. The beds are accessed with pull-down handles disguised as shadow lines, transforming the space into a bedroom for up to four people with seven different day and night configurations. The bathroom is designed as a luxury wet room with a flared outer wall to give a sense of spaciousness, while also providing a dry hanging area.</p>
<p>The accommodation comes in three finishes to suit different event’s needs, with flooring and fabrics sourced from some of Europe’s top design houses.</p>

Trying to put Snoozebox guests at the heart of the action required some innovative thinking and design leadership. tangerine allowed us to take what we wanted conceptually and actually see it realised. They were just so clever whilst also understanding our commercial parameters. Their designers thought through everything, right down to the hinges on the bed, so we were able to achieve this really exciting outcome.

<p>Start-up hospitality business Snoozebox had enjoyed success with its first-generation portable hotel that was created using repurposed shipping containers.  It delivered pop-up hotel accommodation to the heart of cultural and sporting events across the UK such as the Silverstone F1, Glastonbury Music Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Impressed with our reputation of maximising small spaces for premium customer within the aviation industry, Snoozebox commissioned us to create a modular design for new hotel room that could be delivered as a custom mobile solution built by British coachbuilders ASGB.</p>

<p>Hyundai initially set a brief to create a nice studio environment, also providing a list of studio equipment to integrate into the space. However, it was quickly identified that all the equipment listed with designed for a studio not a moving van, the issue of weight, overheating, large consumption of electricity is only the tip of the challenges the team identified.</p>
<p>Tangerine quickly adapted its approach to the project and brought in industry experts and specialist film and sound technicians from BBC’s Top Gear and Channel 4’s Gogglebox television programme, to bring depth of knowledge into the team. From selecting the right equipment for filming in vehicles, the right positioning, and angles to ensure the post-production team could produce dynamic and entertaining content to teaching us the basic principles of lighting and framing faces appropriately on camera so each celebrity was equally positioned. The experts went as far as sharing with the team the needs of celebrities when being filmed.</p>

<p>Tangerine led the design process in conjunction with testing solutions with experts, refining the layout design with effective equipment integration.</p>
<p>The design solution carefully integrates audio-visual systems into a mobile platform, we re-specified everything to overcome problems within the interior space of the van. The equipment list was totally redefined for durability, compactness, quality, and static abilities to deliver premium design, user-comfort, safety as well as quality content.</p>
<p>The team took apart the entire van and worked alongside fabric specialists to audio technicians to ensure the design was carried out to implementation. Often facing unexpected challenges, the team quickly adapted to ensure the design wasn’t compromised and quality was delivered as well as being safe as a vehicle and optimal for live filming purposes.</p>

<p>Lounge type seating offers a familiar and fun ambience in the van totally reimagining a typical van interior. Design informed down to the details from the type of microphones selected to the eye-level camera and screens so each celebrity can see how they look live to adjustable dimming LED lights to ensure that the celebrities are appropriately lit during on-the-go filming.</p>
<p>Six compact high-resolution cameras were built into the van and bolted to the floor for stable broadcasting, materials were strategically selected to reduce external noise and interference and bespoke furniture ensured production engineers had a designated area to work in without interfering the live show.</p>
<p>The van also ensured utmost safety with un-obstructed entry and exit points on the side and back of the vehicle. With the new spatial layout, seats had to be modified to meet seatbelt requirements. The production table was totally customised to ensure the station was secure and unable to injure anyone when the van was moving.</p>
<p>The result is an exclusive, bespoke platform that offers a unique environment to host on-the-move recording sessions and live streaming; redefining what can be achieved within the space of a van.</p>
<p>Hyundai&#8217;s Solati Studio has picked up a Good Design Award in the USA and an IF Design Award from Germany, in recognition of the innovative design solution.</p>

<p>Hyundai’s ambition is to move beyond being a provider of transportation solutions, and to rethink how to best meet people’s needs and desires while travelling. In combination with SM Entertainment and Hyundai asked us to help to create a unique co-branded mobility platform to showcase the versatility of their new Solati van and promote SM Entertainment&#8217;s world-renowned K-pop stars. The aim was to create an exclusive, bespoke, platform that could offer a unique environment in which to host their celebrity clientele on-the-move and deliver high-performance recording sessions for live streaming to social media.</p>

<p>Together, the design teams in London and Seoul carried out extensive consumer and retail insight research; visiting stores, interviewing customers and retail staff and collaborating with visual merchandising experts to gather valuable consumer intelligence.</p>
<p>We identified that the company needed a new guiding design strategy, to shift Innisfree’s brand identify from a regional concept that was too closely linked to Jeju island – a volcanic island in the Korean Strait – to something bigger and more globally relevant in the mind of their customers. tangerine proposed a new proposition ‘Real Natural Living’, which communicates Innisfree is not just a natural beauty brand but a lifestyle choice.</p>
<p>The new flagship store had to reflect this shift in strategic direction, and we planned the zoning and designed the visual merchandising to choreograph their experience and change the pace of discovery as customers move throughout the store.</p>

<p>The new direction permeates every dimension of the store experience; from how present and new ranges are organised, encountered and displayed, through to the choice of all interior fixtures and the design of the exterior architecture.</p>
<p>Bespoke designed floor-to-ceiling fragrance diffusers give customers an innovative way to rapidly test and select scents before purchase, and the design of visual merchandising changes form and character to enhance zoning and discovery.</p>
<p>The company’s environmentally sensitive outlook is tangibly communicated through the Green Café, where the food and beverage menu features fresh natural ingredients used in Innisfree’s natural skincare ranges.</p>
<p>Bespoke seating booths and chairs made from 100% reclaimed plastic and responsibly harvested wood, provide sustainable cafe seating.  And real tree trunk columns break up the seating areas, to create a natural sanctuary for diners.</p>

It has become a multi-sensory and guided experience where shoppers can more easily find what they are looking for,  browse and discover more about the essential ingredients and products that best suit their skin type, desired performance or lifestyle.</p>
<p>Merchandising walls and displays form part of the architectural expression of the interior, enhancing the shopping experience and changing the pace or communicating purpose.  The whole ambiance is clean and natural but also confident and powerful, expressing both the subtle and yet powerful dynamics of nature.</p>
<p>Discovery of natural ingredients used in Innisfree’s beauty products within the Green café, reinforces in the mind of the customer the benefits that are derived from the brand’s expertly crafted natural products and the Innisfree lifestyle, and commitment to a sustainable and more natural future.</p>

<p>Innisfree is Korea’s no.1 natural beauty brand and part of the AmorePacific family. Their CEO had set the ambition to become a global SPA brand and they approached us with the brief to design a new flagship store, that would help them to explore a future direction for the whole business. With the key to this fast-retailing market being able to react rapidly to changing consumer tastes and have the infrastructure in place to respond immediately.</p>
<p>We helped Innisfree to create a unique customer experience through the total design of an entire flagship store, from the redefinition of the proposition to make it appealing for Global markets, to the design of a distinctive, organised and relevant store experience that celebrated natural ingredients and innovated in the way that customers experience them.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The team went through a Discovery phase where they explored Egyptian culture, benchmarked other museum experiences, conducted a range of user interviews for both locals &amp; tourists and visited the GEM site to absorb its character as well as understand its layout. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">The team made sense of the findings, created key guiding insights, crafted a range of user journeys and started to define core GEM experiences. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For tangerine the vision was Revival. GEM will attract visitors from all corners of the world, as well as local visitors, for whom a walk around the gardens and outdoor eating needed to live up to the key user modes of: Relive, Refresh, Relax and Re-engage. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">As a final deliverable we crafted and built a tangible user experience blueprint and design manual. It included a range of memorable signature moments that are authentic, connected and ownable by the GEM brand and just as importantly a set of in-between moments that glued the entire experience together. </span></p>
