British Airways has unveiled its brand-new First seat, combining elegant design with expert British craftsmanship, reflective of modern British luxury travel. The new cabin forms part of the airline’s A380 retrofit plans, expected to take to the skies in mid-2026.
The airline’s new First has been carefully designed to provide the feel of a modern luxury hotel, alongside home comforts and thoughtful British touches at 35,000ft. The seat has been beautifully curated by expert designers, tangerine, and world-class manufacturers from all corners of Great Britain and Ireland, including London, Glasgow, West Yorkshire, Kilkeel and Dublin.

The airline and worked closely with world-class manufacturer, Collins Aerospace RTX business, and designers tangerine to create the First seat.
British Airways is proud to be the only European carrier from the UK to offer a First product across the Atlantic. Customers travelling in First can experience the airline’s most luxurious way to travel, from a stylish seat, exclusive access to lounges, fast-track security, use of the First Wing at Heathrow and excellent service on board. The airline offers the most premium experience for travellers from the moment they book to when they land in their destination.
The airline is continuing to invest in its overall customer experience and has already rolled out over 120 initiatives as part of its £7billion transformation focus, from brand-new short-haul seats, free Wi-Fi messaging on board to refreshing its lounges across its global network.

The new seat is ultra-wide (36.5inches), with a bed length of 79inches, and features a multi-purpose ottoman and elegant stowable table, a 32-inch 4K TV screen, adjustable mood lighting including scenes such as ‘relax’, ‘dine’ and ‘cinema’. The seat can be adjusted with the touch of a button to find the perfect level of comfort and is located within a cocooned 60-inch curved wall for ultimate privacy, whilst still providing a spacious environment.
For customers travelling together in the centre of the cabin, the divider slides open to create a shared lounge space, and the stowable tables mean customers can enjoy ‘buddy dining’ in the seat with their travel companion.

The elegant curves throughout the cabin take inspiration from British Airways’ Concorde wings, giving a natural flow to the space and creating a welcoming environment. Customers can now simply wheel their luggage into their personal luggage space, making it even easier to settle in before their flight.
Elsewhere, the suite features an ambient light with an eye-catching design that subtly references the airline’s speedmarque and further nods to Concorde. The suite features window blinds, activated by buttons on the internal control panel for all three windows per seat. The soft panelling inside the seat also helps with acoustics and absorbing sound, which adds to the sense of being in a cocooned, private space. Customers can also use the seat’s brand-new ‘do not disturb’ functionality on its wireless control tablet, which notifies crew if they wish to maximise their rest on board.

The airline listened to colleagues and customers to help shape design elements and specific features to suit preferences, such as the carefully placed stowage with useability and purpose in mind. The airline also introduced its fully rectangular bed following customer feedback that replicates all the comforts of a home environment.

The airline is the only European carrier to offer First class from London to the US and has worked alongside expert designers and world-class manufacturers to produce a modern luxury seat, championing the best of British craftmanship.
Carefully designed to provide customers with a modern luxury hotel feel, the seat also combines home comforts and thoughtful British touches.
New features include a wider and longer seat, a 32-inch TV screen, buddy dining, optimal sense of space and privacy, with a personal luggage space.

For RECARO to successfully enter the rail market, a strategy was devised to position its products within the competitive rail seating landscape. RECARO identified an opportunity to respond to the trend of longer-distance travel, with operators needing to provide greater seat comfort. A rigorous evaluation of the business landscape was conducted, focusing on what this could mean for target operators. Strategic considerations included the types of layouts operators might adopt, target seat pitch, density, ergonomics, and necessary features.

<h3>Landing</h3>
RECARO&#8217;s multi-class rail seating concept offers enhanced comfort and service for OEMs and international rail operators across Standard, First, and Premium classes. Advanced ergonomics, human factors, and engineering modelling techniques ensure maximum comfort.
We worked with RECARO and engineering partners to design a recline mechanism that angles the seat pan, cradles the passenger as they move into a recline position, and uses a gas spring to return them upright.

The modular seat structure reduces production costs by sharing components between Standard and First Class. The First Class seat adds an upper shell and privacy divider, increasing shoulder space and enhancing comfort and privacy. Seatbacks have a minimal, slim design with integrated features such as flip-down tables, veneer inlays, and concealed stowage straps.

Premium Class seats offer airline-style lie-flat or deep recline options. The angled seat layout allows seats to face in either direction through 90-degree rotation, enabling an always-forward travel operation or facing pairs to create social spaces in the carriage.

Already established as a market leader in the aviation and automotive industries, RECARO aimed for a strategic move into the international rail sector. They sought experienced seating innovation partners to create a ‘step change’ in customer experience within the rail seating market. Choosing tangerine as their collaborative partner, the project included developing new seating concepts for Standard, First, and Premium train classes, suitable for long-distance travel on inter-city and high-speed routes. A ‘ground-up’ design approach was required for the seat structure, comfort system, and all associated features to meet the price constraints of the rail sector.

Hyperloop is a high-speed transportation system, similar in size to a small commercial aircraft without wings. It involves pressurised capsules that levitate on a near-frictionless magnetic field within tubes. The whole proposition for HyperloopTT&#8217;s freight transport is that it&#8217;s cheaper than air and faster than trucks. The speed element is not just about how fast the trains travel around countries but also about loading and unloading as fast as possible to make the whole service efficient.
tangerine was tasked with designing a system for loading and unloading express freight &#8211; which is smaller than large cargo containers &#8211; into the HyperloopTT capsules. To do this, in our research, we avoided looking sideways at competitors and being influenced too much by other industries and instead spoke to the different stakeholders to understand what was important for this system.

<h3>Leap</h3>
A key insight in maximising freight volume came from testing different door mechanisms and different sized doors. We initially thought to have bigger doors to speed up loading but realised this would increase the time for the pressurised DockLock to open and risk changing the conditions of the vacuum.
The DockLock is an air lock that sucks onto the capsule, equalising the pressure inside and outside the tube. By keeping the capsule inside the vacuum and not changing its atmospheric conditions, it makes the structural capabilities of the capsule last significantly longer and limits degradation.
tangerine came up with a solution that involves up-and-over sliding doors, which utilises the rounded shape of the capsule and seeks to maximise the internal space. The layout of the doors was a more challenging element, as we had to create 3D animations to calculate loading/unloading times.

Our design concept for HyperloopTT Express Freight allows for loading and unloading in just 13.2 seconds. This system leverages existing technologies and infrastructure, offering a flexible solution that can switch between passenger and freight transport depending on demand.
Staggered doors allow for a steady, constant flow of loading and unloading. In practice, this means when a capsule arrives into the station, freight can be simultaneously loaded and unloaded.
The load devices run across a roller ball flooring system, which is a modified version of a proprietary system by our long-time collaborator Collins Aerospace, currently used inside the cargo hold of aeroplanes.
The feasibility study around the economics of HyperloopTT&#8217;s plans was carried out in 2019/2020, and €800 million was secured to build the first commercial Hyperloop in Northern Italy in 2024 to prove the freight concept.

HyperloopTT, a leading transportation and technology licensing company, collaborated with us to design the HyperloopTT Express Freight. This innovative freight transport capsule system is set to revolutionise shipping with its speed, efficiency, and sustainability.
We applied our future mobility expertise and service design methodologies to explore the development of a commercially viable freight system. Our goal was to create a design that could potentially transform the logistics industry in terms of efficiency and commercial viability.
To date, HyperloopTT has made major strides, including building the world&#8217;s first full-scale hyperloop test facility, securing over 40 patents, and establishing the first insurance framework and safety certification guidelines for commercial Hyperloop systems.

To gain insight into Poland&#8217;s rich cultural tapestry, tangerine embarked on a journey to Poland, engaging in immersive dialogues with key stakeholders including CEOs, creatives, and renowned film directors. Matt Round, Chief Creative Officer at tangerine, reflects, “Poland is filled with this incredible light that washes over breathtaking scenery. Artists and architects are creating energetic moments of magic and bold landmarks that stamp their mark on the landscape. This was inspirational gold dust.”
Drawing inspiration from Poland&#8217;s status as Europe&#8217;s biggest copper producer, tangerine incorporated copper accents throughout the cabin design, evoking the nation&#8217;s warm hospitality and paying homage to its architectural heritage. The design narrative, influenced by the Museum of Fire in Zory, Poland, seamlessly weaves in touches of copper, Polish craftwork, and Poland’s stunning scenery into the cabin interiors.

tangerine set the vision for travel with LOT, encompassing cabin interiors, onboard service goods, and the lounge experience before developing the design for all three cabin classes: Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy.
‘Pure Polish’ serves as the overarching theme, drawing on Polish heritage and LOT’s ambition for the future. We captured the essence of Poland, translating its sun-illuminated landscapes into cabin elements and suite-door laminates. Inspired by the splendour of sunrise and sunset over the Tatra Mountains, bulkheads in each class evoke ethereal gradients — from dark blue to light blue in Business Class, from dark blue to amber in Premium Economy, and from dark blue to sky pink in Economy.

Passengers boarding LOT’s aircraft worldwide can immerse themselves in the essence of Poland, whether returning home, visiting, or transiting. The elegant entranceway to the aircraft features a copper finish with detailing reminiscent of Polish paper cutting, known as ‘wycinanki’.The cabin CMF reflects Poland’s abundant raw materials, such as copper and amber, fostering a unique connection to Polish roots. The colour palette captures Poland&#8217;s essence, transitioning from dark and sumptuous tones in Business Class to lighter and brighter hues in Economy, enhancing the sense of space in the denser part of the cabin.
This design represents a coherent brand expression for LOT Polish Airlines, fitting seamlessly with their existing fleet and ground experience, while effectively differentiating between classes. With its bold use of colour, contrast, and gradation, coupled with a mix of surface finishes, the cabin environment stands a testament to LOT Polish Airlines&#8217; commitment to innovation and passenger comfort.

In 2022, LOT Polish Airlines chose tangerine to spearhead a comprehensive upgrade to their cabin interiors, signalling a significant evolution in the airline&#8217;s long and short-haul services in its ambition to become the preferred carrier in Central and Eastern Europe. The endeavour was to develop a cohesive cabin interior design concept spanning all classes of LOT’s wide-body Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft and then seamlessly translate it into their narrow-body counterparts. The retrofit programme encompassed a holistic overhaul, including the replacement of seating across all classes, integration of a state-of-the-art in-flight entertainment system, and the introduction of internet connectivity. Infused with a distinct Polish flair, our new cabin interior design pays homage to LOT&#8217;s 95-year legacy while embodying the ethos of Polish hospitality through a contemporary lens.

The style, format, and layout of the eVTOL were influenced by intensive user research conducted with over a hundred high-net-worth individuals across China, enabling the delineation of precise design specifications. Targeting the luxury travel market, the eVTOL had to cater to discerning passengers seeking expedient travel between China&#8217;s bustling metropoles for both business and leisure. The primary challenge lay in striking the right balance between aesthetic excellence, luxury user demands, and stringent engineering constraints.
The internal space of the eVTOL is very similar to a car, so progressive automotive references were drawn upon for design inspiration. At the same time, as a flying experience, the views of remarkable landscapes along the journeys needed to be prioritised by maximising the size of the windows.

To mitigate weight, the eVTOL adopts a single-door configuration, necessitating innovative ingress and egress solutions. Our team devised a skate step to enhance the boarding experience and optimised interior space to accommodate luxury amenities.
Technologically advanced materials sourced from the automotive sector were integrated into the seating, including a bio-based faux leather dress cover, while the headrests were crafted from fully recyclable plastic, 3D printed to achieve a unique knit pattern.
Fully working prototypes have been developed to test flight, with the technological solution design and engineering then refined to introduce some changes to the exterior based on dynamic testing to ensure optimal performance.  Throughout the design process, tangerine worked very closely with the Volkswagen design team and Sunward to make sure the fuselage design is aligned with the manufacturing processes and wind tunnel testing.

This eVTOL is purposefully crafted to provide fast, luxurious, and environmentally friendly travel between China’s megacities for the country’s high-net-worth individuals. The spacious and opulent cabin comfortably accommodates three passengers and their luggage while offering sweeping views through large windows.
Powered by eight fixed upward propellers and two rear forward propulsion propellers, the eVTOL can transport passengers and luggage up to 200 kilometres. It operates purely on electricity and is fully autonomous, building upon existing autonomous driving solutions and battery technology to deliver zero-emission mobility.
The aerodynamic design positions the cabin under the wings, spanning 11.2 meters in length and 10.6 meters in wingspan, ensuring passenger safety away from propellers. The cabin&#8217;s design, inspired by Chinese landscape paintings, evokes harmony with the scenic surroundings, incorporating culturally significant jade for interior colours.
