<p>Hyperloop is a high-speed transportation system, similar in size to a small commercial aircraft without wings. It involves pressurised capsules that levitate on a near-frictionless magnetic field within tubes. The whole proposition for HyperloopTT&#8217;s freight transport is that it&#8217;s cheaper than air and faster than trucks. The speed element is not just about how fast the trains travel around countries but also about loading and unloading as fast as possible to make the whole service efficient.</p>
<p>tangerine was tasked with designing a system for loading and unloading express freight &#8211; which is smaller than large cargo containers &#8211; into the HyperloopTT capsules. To do this, in our research, we avoided looking sideways at competitors and being influenced too much by other industries and instead spoke to the different stakeholders to understand what was important for this system.</p>

<p>tangerine defined the four key &#8220;design drivers&#8221; for the project as:</p>

<li>Fast Loading: Ensure the freight can be loaded and unloaded as quickly as possible.</li>

<li>Maximised Freight Volume: Optimise the internal space of the capsule to maximise freight capacity.</li>

<h3>Leap</h3>
<p>A key insight in maximising freight volume came from testing different door mechanisms and different sized doors. We initially thought to have bigger doors to speed up loading but realised this would increase the time for the pressurised DockLock to open and risk changing the conditions of the vacuum.</p>
<p>The DockLock is an air lock that sucks onto the capsule, equalising the pressure inside and outside the tube. By keeping the capsule inside the vacuum and not changing its atmospheric conditions, it makes the structural capabilities of the capsule last significantly longer and limits degradation.</p>
<p>tangerine came up with a solution that involves up-and-over sliding doors, which utilises the rounded shape of the capsule and seeks to maximise the internal space. The layout of the doors was a more challenging element, as we had to create 3D animations to calculate loading/unloading times.</p>

<h3>Land</h3>
<p>Our design concept for HyperloopTT Express Freight allows for loading and unloading in just 13.2 seconds. This system leverages existing technologies and infrastructure, offering a flexible solution that can switch between passenger and freight transport depending on demand.</p>
<p>Staggered doors allow for a steady, constant flow of loading and unloading. In practice, this means when a capsule arrives into the station, freight can be simultaneously loaded and unloaded.</p>
<p>The load devices run across a roller ball flooring system, which is a modified version of a proprietary system by our long-time collaborator Collins Aerospace, currently used inside the cargo hold of aeroplanes.</p>
<p>The feasibility study around the economics of HyperloopTT&#8217;s plans was carried out in 2019/2020, and €800 million was secured to build the first commercial Hyperloop in Northern Italy in 2024 to prove the freight concept.</p>

<p>HyperloopTT, a leading transportation and technology licensing company, collaborated with us to design the HyperloopTT Express Freight. This innovative freight transport capsule system is set to revolutionise shipping with its speed, efficiency, and sustainability.</p>
<p>We applied our future mobility expertise and service design methodologies to explore the development of a commercially viable freight system. Our goal was to create a design that could potentially transform the logistics industry in terms of efficiency and commercial viability.</p>
<p>To date, HyperloopTT has made major strides, including building the world&#8217;s first full-scale hyperloop test facility, securing over 40 patents, and establishing the first insurance framework and safety certification guidelines for commercial Hyperloop systems.</p>

<p>To gain insight into Poland&#8217;s rich cultural tapestry, tangerine embarked on a journey to Poland, engaging in immersive dialogues with key stakeholders including CEOs, creatives, and renowned film directors. Matt Round, Chief Creative Officer at tangerine, reflects, “Poland is filled with this incredible light that washes over breathtaking scenery. Artists and architects are creating energetic moments of magic and bold landmarks that stamp their mark on the landscape. This was inspirational gold dust.”</p>
<p>Drawing inspiration from Poland&#8217;s status as Europe&#8217;s biggest copper producer, tangerine incorporated copper accents throughout the cabin design, evoking the nation&#8217;s warm hospitality and paying homage to its architectural heritage. The design narrative, influenced by the Museum of Fire in Zory, Poland, seamlessly weaves in touches of copper, Polish craftwork, and Poland’s stunning scenery into the cabin interiors.</p>

<h3>Leap</h3>
<p>tangerine set the vision for travel with LOT, encompassing cabin interiors, onboard service goods, and the lounge experience before developing the design for all three cabin classes: Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy.</p>
<p>‘Pure Polish’ serves as the overarching theme, drawing on Polish heritage and LOT’s ambition for the future. We captured the essence of Poland, translating its sun-illuminated landscapes into cabin elements and suite-door laminates. Inspired by the splendour of sunrise and sunset over the Tatra Mountains, bulkheads in each class evoke ethereal gradients — from dark blue to light blue in Business Class, from dark blue to amber in Premium Economy, and from dark blue to sky pink in Economy.</p>

<p>Passengers boarding LOT’s aircraft worldwide can immerse themselves in the essence of Poland, whether returning home, visiting, or transiting. The elegant entranceway to the aircraft features a copper finish with detailing reminiscent of Polish paper cutting, known as ‘wycinanki’.The cabin CMF reflects Poland’s abundant raw materials, such as copper and amber, fostering a unique connection to Polish roots. The colour palette captures Poland&#8217;s essence, transitioning from dark and sumptuous tones in Business Class to lighter and brighter hues in Economy, enhancing the sense of space in the denser part of the cabin.</p>
<p>This design represents a coherent brand expression for LOT Polish Airlines, fitting seamlessly with their existing fleet and ground experience, while effectively differentiating between classes. With its bold use of colour, contrast, and gradation, coupled with a mix of surface finishes, the cabin environment stands a testament to LOT Polish Airlines&#8217; commitment to innovation and passenger comfort.</p>

<p>In 2022, LOT Polish Airlines chose tangerine to spearhead a comprehensive upgrade to their cabin interiors, signalling a significant evolution in the airline&#8217;s long and short-haul services in its ambition to become the <span class="ui-provider a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z ab ac ae af ag ah ai aj ak" dir="ltr">preferred carrier in Central and Eastern Europe. </span>The endeavour was to develop a cohesive cabin interior design concept spanning all classes of LOT’s wide-body Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft and then seamlessly translate it into their narrow-body counterparts. The retrofit programme encompassed a holistic overhaul, including the replacement of seating across all classes, integration of a state-of-the-art in-flight entertainment system, and the introduction of internet connectivity. Infused with a distinct Polish flair, our new cabin interior design pays homage to LOT&#8217;s 95-year legacy while embodying the ethos of Polish hospitality through a contemporary lens.</p>

<p>The style, format, and layout of the eVTOL were influenced by intensive user research conducted with over a hundred high-net-worth individuals across China, enabling the delineation of precise design specifications. Targeting the luxury travel market, the eVTOL had to cater to discerning passengers seeking expedient travel between China&#8217;s bustling metropoles for both business and leisure. The primary challenge lay in striking the right balance between aesthetic excellence, luxury user demands, and stringent engineering constraints.</p>
<p>The internal space of the eVTOL is very similar to a car, so progressive automotive references were drawn upon for design inspiration. At the same time, as a flying experience, the views of remarkable landscapes along the journeys needed to be prioritised by maximising the size of the windows.</p>

<p>To mitigate weight, the eVTOL adopts a single-door configuration, necessitating innovative ingress and egress solutions. Our team devised a skate step to enhance the boarding experience and optimised interior space to accommodate luxury amenities.</p>
<p>Technologically advanced materials sourced from the automotive sector were integrated into the seating, including a bio-based faux leather dress cover, while the headrests were crafted from fully recyclable plastic, 3D printed to achieve a unique knit pattern.</p>
<p>Fully working prototypes have been developed to test flight, with the technological solution design and engineering then refined to introduce some changes to the exterior based on dynamic testing to ensure optimal performance.  Throughout the design process, tangerine worked very closely with the Volkswagen design team and Sunward to make sure the fuselage design is aligned with the manufacturing processes and wind tunnel testing.</p>

<p>This eVTOL is purposefully crafted to provide fast, luxurious, and environmentally friendly travel between China’s megacities for the country’s high-net-worth individuals. The spacious and opulent cabin comfortably accommodates three passengers and their luggage while offering sweeping views through large windows.</p>
<p>Powered by eight fixed upward propellers and two rear forward propulsion propellers, the eVTOL can transport passengers and luggage up to 200 kilometres. It operates purely on electricity and is fully autonomous, building upon existing autonomous driving solutions and battery technology to deliver zero-emission mobility.</p>
<p>The aerodynamic design positions the cabin under the wings, spanning 11.2 meters in length and 10.6 meters in wingspan, ensuring passenger safety away from propellers. The cabin&#8217;s design, inspired by Chinese landscape paintings, evokes harmony with the scenic surroundings, incorporating culturally significant jade for interior colours.</p>
<p>Sky Garden exudes an ambience of tranquillity and spaciousness, ideal for passengers to embark on their business endeavours after a comforting commute. Sustainable materials, smart fabric touchpads, immersive displays, and seamless connectivity converge to create a truly unique and luxurious experience.</p>
<p>While the initial prototype targets private ownership, future iterations will cater to diverse user needs. Ongoing design efforts focus on developing a production version that retains our concept&#8217;s aesthetic language while enhancing passenger capacity and creating a lightweight interior for airworthiness.</p>

<p>In a groundbreaking collaboration spanning two years, tangerine partnered with VW Group China to pioneer its inaugural eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing) aircraft, named V.MO &#8216;Sky Garden&#8217;. This endeavour epitomised an exceptional amalgamation of design, engineering, and manufacturing prowess, resulting in the realisation of a visionary mode of transportation. The design underwent meticulous refinement through a series of iterative stages, including extensive prototyping and flight trials, earning prestigious accolades such as the German Design Award 2023 and the iF Award 2023.</p>
<p>While the project had been in progress for some time, tangerine officially joined the team in February 2022 following a rigorous selection process. Renowned for our proficiency in commercial aircraft design and crafting luxurious passenger experiences, we garnered the trust of VW Group China, forging a collaborative alliance. Our mandate encompassed harmonising user expectations, the VW Group brand identity, and engineering imperatives to shape the aircraft&#8217;s exterior and interior aesthetics.</p>

<h3><strong>Learn </strong></h3>
<p>tangerine won a competitive international pitch process, in which it presented a range of design options to the Southwest team illustrating how the airline could build on its heritage and communicate its maverick spirit in the refresh of its cabin interior.</p>
<p>To kick off the design development phase and to help set the creative vision, four members of tangerine’s London studio travelled to Southwest&#8217;s HQ in Dallas. Their mission was to meet with the business stakeholders and customers to find out what they love and value from the Southwest brand.</p>
<p>“We needed to help Southwest stand out amongst other US carriers”, said Matt Round, tangerine’s Chief Creative Officer. “Our proposal expressed the unmistakable energy of the airline and gave the cabin interior environment more heart”.</p>
<p>During the two-week immersion trip we spoke with employees from across the business: from marketing and customer experience, communications, inflight crew, engineering, sustainability, and much more, including the CEO. These conversations instilled the design team with valuable insights into how the cabin interior design could contribute to the success of the business and help achieve Southwest’s goal of ‘being the most loved, most efficient and most profitable airline’.</p>

<h3><strong>Leap</strong></h3>
<p>We held a series of workshops and one-on-one interviews with existing and prospective Southwest customers. Research themes covered passengers’ perceptions of colour, aspects of comfort, and their aspirations for the onboard experience. The key priorities of Southwest’s passengers were identified as a space to feel calm and cosy, while also having a sense of energy. These insights shaped how tangerine would respond through its creative process.</p>
<p>To test the developing design concepts, Southwest and tangerine took a rigorous approach including customer workshops, quantitative research, 2D and 3D mock-ups, and collaborative reviews with their leadership to understand the relative strengths and weaknesses of each concept.</p>
<p>The chosen design route was based on a concept that brings a calming sense of nature into the cabin with a look and feel that is distinctly Southwest. In bringing the design to life, we worked closely with Southwest’s supply chain and technical operations teams to conduct many rounds of physical sampling, including pattern, colour, and material to ensure the right tonality was achieved in the cabin while maintaining a reliable operation in service. Details of the cabin feature RECARO economy seats in a pattern evocative of rays of sunlight falling on surfaces linking back to Customer feedback of connecting to nature to bring a sense of calmness.</p>

<p>At the start of 2024 Southwest Airlines announced its all-new interior designed to respond to the priorities of Southwest’s customers present and future, following the iterative design process that included the passengers.</p>
<p>Southwest brand colours are communicated throughout the cabin in deep blue tones, with a newly introduced sky-blue accent. The airline’s instantly recognisable Southwest heart is debossed on headrests and subtly emerges from the carpet’s fluid woven pattern.</p>

<p>Over the 18-month programme, tangerine found the soul of Southwest. By understanding both its business objectives and the special place that the brand holds in its customers’ minds, the design was confirmed to be the right fit for Southwest and its passengers.</p>
<p>“By working closely with Southwest and all suppliers involved, we were able to ensure the design intent was executed in the cabin to the highest possible quality. The stunning result is a testament to what can be achieved through a collaborative spirit from all those involved”, reflects Round.</p>
<p>Southwest will introduce the Boeing 737 cabin design in early 2025.</p>

<p>Southwest is one of the United States major American airlines with a proud history operating a low-cost carrier model. The Dallas, Texas-based airline stands apart from the competition with customer-friendly policies and industry-leading flexibility, coupled with the one-of-a-kind hospitality offered by its employees. tangerine was tasked with creating a new cabin interior design that would be distinctive in the competitive US domestic and transcontinental markets, while also communicating Southwest’s legendary brand in a way that would bring its customer’s comfort.</p>

<p>The project began with immersive research and interviews at a range of workplace environments. Spanning multiple countries, trade shows and different industry sectors the team sought valuable insights into how design could make Rainbow Robotics’ cobots more accessible to people and improve workflow efficiencies for a wider range of users and industries.</p>

<h2>Leaping</h2>
<p>We observed that robotics engineers have traditionally focused on developing the emerging technology rather than thinking about the aesthetics, ease-of-use and user interface of the machine. A key finding highlighted that cobots are often too complex in use and require an engineer to set-up and operate them. A significant failing, given their success is predicated on their ability to work alongside people collaboratively in a variety of industrial settings. What was missing was a ‘human touch’!</p>

<h2>Landing</h2>
<p>Taking inspiration from the word ‘rainbow’ the Prism DNA was born. The triangular body makes it easier to install in a diverse range of environments due to its compact design. The prism-shaped arms make the Co-bot easier to grip by hand and move during the manual operating process (teaching mode). Compared to traditional Co-bots, the RB Series naturally follows a straight line making it intuitive for the operator to recognise which direction the arm will travel in during operation, aiding close collaborative working.</p>
<p>Key features such as LED indicators on every joint give real-time feedback to enhance programming accuracy. A one-touch button on the teaching pendant ensures an error-free experience when marking the path for the RB Co-bot to follow.</p>
<p>To ensure the design and brand were aligned. A vibrant colour for the Co-bot was chosen strategically to enhance the visibility of the Co-bot in environments. The more visible a moving machine, the safer the work environment.</p>
<p>tangerine and the Rainbow robotics’ software and programming team members collaborated to create the completely new image-based GUI. The new all-in-one platform personalises the graphic interface by adapting the Co-bot’s function depending on the different type of users operating the system.</p>
<p>We also designed Rainbow Robotics’ new brand identity, including a wordmark, brand guidelines book, and marketing collateral. Helping to announce the company to its customers as a design-led organisation offering high-quality, intuitive, and innovative products.</p>

It was a true meeting of scientific minds and design thinking that helped give form and function to a product that significantly enhances the user experience. This is what will drive the success of this new Co-bot within the workplace.

<p>Pioneering South Korean robotics company Rainbow Robotics, a new venture born out of KAIST University and led by the scientists who developed the bi-pedal robot HUBO, wanted to develop their first fully designed commercial collaborative robot and build a brand identity to support it. The partnership spanned three years, involving a close collaboration between scientists, engineers, and designers based out of our Seoul studio.</p>

<h3>Learn</h3>
<p>Following our collaboration on JAL’s domestic programme that launched in 2019, we used our ‘Infused Essence’ strategy, which established tenants of the ‘stylistic beauty of Japan’, to create a new design vision that could be translated across all four classes of A350-1000 to express a new interpretation related to the aircraft, while also being a consistent part of the design language established by our team for across JAL’s fleet.</p>
<p>Crucially, before the programme started, we supported JAL in a seat vendor selection with two prospective manufacturers, developing two versions of our concept to maximise the standard offerings being put forward by the vendors in response to JAL’s requirements. This iterative process involved holding workshops with JAL and each vendor to assess the potential of their products, including the level of customisation that could be achieved, and how well they could implement our design concept. Following the process, with tangerine’s input, Safran Seats was selected to create the First Class, and Business Class seating, with JAL also selecting Safran for PEY and Recaro for Economy.</p>

<h3>Leap</h3>
<p>Three concept directions were developed for the chosen seating choices. spanning from a close interpretation of the original Infused Essence design vision, through to a more progressive route, and finally, a more innovative interpretation. These routes explored different design languages and CMF treatments of the cabin spaces and seating, allowing the programme team to make informed decisions on the right fit for JAL’s brand and for achieving an optimal passenger experience.  The selected route was a progressive interpretation of Infused Essence, with the team finding innovative ways to apply it in a way to support the LOPA and class strategy.</p>

<h3>Land</h3>
<p>The A350-1000 cabin interior has been designed to immerse customers in the elegance of Japanese culture and aesthetics, enveloping guests in a sense of tranquillity and a serene ambience that encapsulates the beauty of Japan. Completely redesigned seats have been installed in all classes to provide JAL&#8217;s most relaxing and comfortable experience to date.</p>
<p>Industry Firsts include built-in speakers developed by Safran Seats for JAL’s Business and First seating, allowing passengers to enjoy inflight entertainment without using headphones. A three-people dining space is provided in First, as well as a seat that can also be turned into an extra wide bed. JAL also becomes the first airline to introduce an electric automated recline in Premium Economy and a fixed privacy divider between seats in the middle of the cabin to maximize privacy.</p>
<p>The cabin interior design was inspired by the sights, sounds and experiences present in Japan. For instance, in Business the use of the Japanese rice paper wall, or Shoji, is incorporated in both sliding doors and closets. Whereas in First, the delicate downlight design was inspired by cocktails drunk in the Orchard Bar at the old Hotel Okura, once a Tokyo landmark, graced by visiting Presidents. And for the first time in the carrier’s history, first class seats will feature privacy doors; beautifully crafted in latticework that is reminiscent of the famous Ukiyoe artwork and traditional Japanese woodcraft.</p>
<p>The launch of JAL’s A350-1000 brings synergy to the airline’s domestic and international fleet, building on tangerine’s Infused Essence design strategy first implemented on <a href="https://tangerine.net/work/jal-a350" target="_blank" rel="noopener">JAL’s A350-900</a> in 2019.</p>
