Snoozebox hotel wins Intelligent Design Award

tangerine’s innovative hotel rooms designed for Snoozebox portable hotel win Best Intelligent Design Award at the SBID International Design Awards 2015.

The winning project’s portable hotel rooms transform externally and internally to suit a range of guests, providing a day room and seven different en-suite sleeping configurations within the same space. Through exploiting specialist laser-cutting and folding processes, beds are hidden within metal frames integrated into the walls. Tessellation of space and form around custom designed hinges, which rotate through a variable arc, stow the beds tightly to optimise living space and allow rooms to compact by 50% for transport. A 100 room hotel can be deployed and set-up to greet guests within 24 hours.

Matt Round, Creative Director of the design consultancy tangerine, who led the design of the project says,

“I think it is tremendous to receive this award, what is really exciting is that Snoozebox is challenging the market and what currently exists and delivering portable accommodation and we are incredibly privileged to have been given this opportunity to design such a remarkable product and be awarded for it!”

The winners of the SBID International Design Awards 2015 were revealed on Friday 27 November in a beautiful ceremony at the prestigious Dorchester hotel in London. This year, the Awards represented industry talent from 41 countries from all creative corners of the world.

SBID International Design Awards is regarded as one of the highest accolades in the interior design industry. The winners of this global distinction are rigorously assessed and decided by a technical panel, the public vote and a panel of leading industry experts, who look for outstanding examples of technical content and aesthetic creativity.

Sponsoring the Intelligent Design category is luxury showroom, Harlequin London. Managing Director, Jaime Horton says:

“Design purists will understand the need for truly understanding a client’s brief, their budget and problems associated with a project; then successfully bringing them all together, cleverly, using original and creative thinking to produce an innovative solution that exceeds the client’s expectation. We feel that this is the ultimate skill in design and as such we passionately support this category in the awards”.

Success at the SBID awards for Best Intelligent Design rounds up a year of critical acclaim for tangerine and Snoozebox. The new portable hotel rooms have received distinctions from the Good Design Award® – winning Best Architectural Design – the Industrial Society of America’s IDEA awards, the Radical Innovation Awards and the German Design Awards.
